Notice of Special Interest (NOSI): Stimulate Research on the Diagnosis, Treatment, and Mechanistic Understanding of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS)
Expiration Date: Saturday, January 8, 2028
NOFO Number: NOT-HL-24-018
Tuesday, August 13, 2024
Notice Type: Notice of Special Interest
Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is a debilitating condition that affects between 0.2 and 1% of the US population and may be even more prevalent since the COVID-19 pandemic. The conditionimpairs individuals' ability to participate in routine activities such as working, attending school, exercising and activities of daily life. POTS primarily affects women of child-bearing age, with most studies reporting 80-90% female predominance. While many individuals with POTS report symptoms beginning in adolescence, up to half of all individuals with POTS develop it in adulthood. The impact of POTS across the lifespan has until now not been well studied, and given the female preponderance of the condition there is an unmet need to study how the condition is impacted by events such as menarche, pregnancy and menopause. There is a compelling need to stimulate research focused on improving diagnosis and treatment of POTS. This may include development of biomarkers and diagnostic tools as well as translational studies and mechanistic clinical trials to guide the development of interventions aimed at preventing and curing POTS. This NOSI signals interest in this important area with the goal of stimulating research applications to address these critical needs.
Notice of Intent to Publish a Funding Opportunity Announcement for Towards a Better Understanding of the Neurological Effects of Infection-Associated Chronic Illnesses (R01 - Clinical Trial Optional)
Expiration Date: Saturday, January 1, 2028
NOFO Number: NOT-NS-24-105
Monday, July 8, 2024
Notice Type: NOT
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) intend to promote a new initiative by publishing a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) that solicits applications focused on the neurological and psychiatric manifestations of infection-associated chronic illnesses, including the post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (Neuro-PASC) as well as other chronic illnesses with a potential infectious trigger (post-treatment Lyme Disease, myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome [ME/CFS], postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome [POTS], post-viral fatigue syndromes, etc.). Projects that investigate common neuropsychiatric mechanisms across multiple infection-associated chronic illnesses would be of particular interest, although this is not a requirement (i.e., applications can focus on a single condition).

Notice of Intent to Publish a Funding Opportunity Announcement for Understanding Neurological Effects of COVID-19 and Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 Infection (R01 Clinical Trial Optional)
Expiration Date: Saturday, January 1, 2028
NOFO Number: NOT-NS-23-068
Thursday, February 23, 2023
Notice Type: NOT
National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and the National Institute on Aging (NIA) intend to promote a new initiative by publishing a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to invite exploratory and innovative researchapplications focused on theneurological and neuropsychiatric manifestationsof COVID-19 (neuro-COVID) andPost-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 Infection (neuro-PASC) and on the effect of COVID-19 on pre-infection neurologic conditions. Applications investigating the pathophysiology and mechanisms of neuro-COVID and neuro-PASC and neurologically-focused human subjects research, as well as those proposing studies of scientifically compelling pathways to prevent the development of neuro-PASC or to accelerate the development of effective treatments forPASC-related neurological complications are of particular interest for this FOA. This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects. The FOA is expected to be published in the first quarter of 2023 with an expected application due date in late Spring 2023. This FOA will utilize the R01 activity code. Details of the planned FOA are provided below.

Temporary Extension of Eligibility for the NINDS F32 Award Due the COVID-19 Pandemic
Expiration Date: Saturday, January 1, 2028
NOFO Number: NOT-NS-21-059
Thursday, April 29, 2021
Notice Type: NOT
The NINDS F32 is designed specifically to support postdoctoral fellows who are beginning their training period in a new laboratory or research environment. Applicants are only eligible to apply for the NINDS F32 either before beginning or within the first 12 months of joining the postdoctoral lab in which the fellowship will be active. Given this eligibility window, many applicants apply either before or within the first 3 months in the laboratory (~30% of applicants have been in the postdoctoral laboratory for less than 3 months). At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic many laboratories across the country shut down. This would have been particularly detrimental to those transitioning to their new positions, which in most cases required not only a change in research institution but a move to a different city and/or state. Clearly, for those starting a new postdoctoral position right as the pandemic hit, labs began to close down amid uncertainty and remote interactions were just beginning to be developed. Although pandemic-related delays were not unique to a specific cohort of trainees, the individuals who were just starting in new postdoctoral positions during the initial months of the pandemic were some of the hardest hit in terms of their ability to integrate into and begin research-related activities in new laboratories. Consequently, NINDS will provide a 1-receipt cycle extension of eligibility to individuals who started in their new laboratory between February 1 and May 30 of 2020. Ordinarily, the last NINDS F32 due date for these individuals would have been February, 2021. With this extension, these individuals will now be eligible to apply for the June, 2021 due date.
