This notice is to clarify that onlyBasic Experimental Studies Involving Humans (BESH) clinical trials are withinscope of the above NOFOs (PAR-25-020, PAR-25-055, PAR-24-098, and PAR-24-096). BESH are prospective basic science studies involving human participants (also see NOT-OD-18-212). These studies fall within the NIH definition of a clinical trial and also meet the definition of basic research. The types of studies that applicants should submit in response to these NOFOs include studies that prospectively assign human participants to conditions (i.e., experimentally manipulate independent variables) and that assess biomedical or behavioral outcomes in humans for the purpose of understanding the fundamental aspects of phenomena without specific application towards processes or products in mind.

In April 2021 and September 2021, NIH began providing childcare cost support, respectively to recipients of full-time NRSA fellowships and training grants in recognition that the high cost of childcare impacts graduate student and postdoctoral scholar ability to successfully complete their training and fully participate in the extramural research workforce (NOT-OD-21-074; NOT-OD-21-177; NOT-OD-24-116). Beginning in FY25, NIH will begin providing childcare cost support to individuals supported as full-time recipients of Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Fellow Transition Award (F99/K00) programs during the F99 phase of the award.

This Announcement solicits applications for the early-stage development of therapeutics to mitigate the adverse health effects resulting from toxic chemical exposure. Chemical threats are toxic compounds that could be used in a terrorist attack or accidentally released from industrial production, storage or shipping. They include specific chemical warfare agents, toxic industrial chemicals, pesticides, and pharmaceutical-based agents. The overall scope of this solicitation includes validation of therapeutic targets and preclinical characterization of lead compounds. The UG3 phase of this announcement supports target validation and characterization of initial lead compound(s); UH3 phase activities include candidate optimization and in vivo demonstration of activity and efficacy in relevant post-exposure models. At the conclusion of the overall UG3/UH3 funding period, projects are expected to deliver at least one well-characterized therapeutic candidate.
