The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) is committed to ensuring that the research it funds adheres to the highest standards of scientific rigor. At the same time, NINDS understands the challenges that extensive data collection can pose for both investigators and study participants. Recognizing that researchers often independently select data elements and forms for their studies, many of which could be standardized across different studies, NINDS has launched the Common Data Element (CDE) project. This initiative aims to enhance the quality of research while simplifying the data collection process in clinical trials and neurological studies.

The NINDS Common Data Elements website is a resource hub designed to support investigators in planning and conducting research. It offers a comprehensive repository of all NINDS CDEs, providing clinical researchers with easy access to standardized data elements, their definitions, and sample data collection forms. This tool facilitates the efficient use of CDEs in research projects.

Propose new CDEs or revision of existing CDEs

The NINDS CDE Project Request Form can be used to propose CDE development for neurological disease/condition and other research areas with no existing CDEs, for development of a new subgroup of CDEs for an existing CDE set, or for substantial revisiting/revising an existing CDE set.
