Lynn W. Enquist, Ph.D.

Dr. Enquist’s research, delineating mechanisms by which viruses infect the nervous system, has consistently been at the cutting edge of neurovirology. His group has developed technologies that enable them to physically isolate neuronal axons from cell bodies, optically image viral entry events and subsequent axonal transport of virus particles, and characterize new proteins synthesized in axons immediately post-infection. Here, Dr. Enquist focuses on how axons in the peripheral nervous system detect and defend themselves against invading alpha-herpesviruses.
