Dr. Lukacher’s research is focused on studying the human pathogen JC polyomavirus, which causes several devastating brain diseases in immune-compromised individuals. His team developed a tractable animal model to explore early stages in the pathogenesis of polyomavirus brain infections before they lead to tissue damage and disease. The goals of this research program are to address questions regarding innate and adaptive immune control of polyomavirus CNS infection and the conditions that allow the virus to migrate into the brain from the periphery.
