Joel Voss was a Postdoctoral Fellow in Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. In the laboratory of Neal Cohen, his research project aimed to discover how coordinated neural systems optimize learning and memory by strategically allocating resources in order to meet the demands of a particular learning situation. The project also sought to develop optimal strategies that can be used by older individuals to combat the pervasive challenge of age-related memory decline. He earned his Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Northwestern University, and his B.S. in Biology and Psychology from Eckerd College.
