James Murray is a Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Theoretical Neuroscience at Columbia University. Through joint mentorship from Larry Abbott and Rui Costa, his research address the theory of reinforcement learning, which provides a rich and powerful framework for addressing how actions should be performed in order to maximize future rewards. His work leverages machine learning techniques and mathematical models that are compared to experimental data to address how the mammalian brain implements reinforcement learning to integrate behaviors. He received his Ph.D. in physics from Johns Hopkins University, and earned his B.S. in physics from the Montana State University. Prior to Columbia University, he conducted postdoctoral work at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory.
