Dr. Huganir’s research focuses on understanding fundamental mechanisms that regulate neurotransmitter receptor function and might be critical determinants in animal behavior. His project will expand on an effort to understand how neuronal dendrites regulate the surface expression of AMPA channels, one of the two primary glutamate receptors, especially during learning and memory. In addition, his project will adapt quantitative mass spectrometry to build upon his characterization of dynamic protein interactions that modulate AMPA channel function. This research will elucidate molecular mechanisms that regulate neurotransmitter receptor function and synaptic transmission, with wider relevance to many brain disorders.
