Dr. Lu’s research studies how distinct glial cell subtypes in the central and peripheral nervous systems are generated, how they regenerate after injury, and how they transform into cancerous cells under pathological conditions. Here, he proposes to investigate the function of a novel Hippo signaling pathway in peripheral nerve sheath tumorigenesis. The long-term goal of his work is to identify therapeutic targets for treating malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors, and to ultimately develop effective therapies against tumor formation and progression in patients with these aggressive, metastatic tumors.
