The focus of Dr. McCullough's research is on identifying sex differences in cell death pathways during stroke, which are now recognized as major factors in the response to an ischemic insult. Her laboratory also studies aging and inflammation, and how these factors influence recovery after stroke. For this project, she seeks to study social isolation as a risk factor for stroke, as well as a contributor to increased stroke severity and delayed functional recovery, using miRNAs that are differentially expressed after post-stroke isolation.
