Dr. Shaham’s work focuses on understanding the role of glia in nervous system development and function. The interplay between neurons and glia – which constitute a large fraction of cells in the vertebrate nervous system – remains largely unknown. Dr. Shaham’s program will investigate the role of glia as internal regulators by studying: how astrocytic glia develop and regulate synaptic function, how glia guide brain assembly, and how glia-dependent neurodegeneration might contribute to cell death.
