Dr. Feany’s research examines the molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegeneration in human disorders like Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, using Drosophila as a disease model. The laboratory uses genetic and molecular tools available in Drosophila to investigate cellular pathways required for the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease. Trainees described Dr. Feany’s ability to encourage exploration of ideas and areas of interest, rather than conforming to a pre-conceived training plan. Of note, previous trainees noted that this mentoring approach built self-confidence, strengthened personal development, and fostered true intellectual independence.
