Vittorio Gallo, Ph.D.

Dr. Vittorio Gallo studies glial regulation of neural development and response to injury. For this project, he will study the cellular pathophysiology underlying diffuse white matter injury and abnormal myelination caused by hypoxia. The work will focus on one category of glia – oligodendrocytes. Specifically, he will examine the dysregulation of oligodendrocyte progenitor cell proliferation and oligodendrocyte maturation, which will lead to a greater understanding of how hypoxia in premature birth compromises axonal integrity and function.
