Dr. Lyn Jakeman is the Director of the Division of Neuroscience in Extramural Programs at National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS).  In this role, Dr. Jakeman oversees program staff managing extramural grants in basic discovery and neurological disease research.  In addition, she helps to coordinate activities of the Division of Neuroscience with the Directors and staff of the Division of Translational Research, the Division of Clinical Research, and the Division of Extramural Activities at NINDS and interacts with Program Staff and Division Directors across the NIH.  Prior to this appointment Dr. Jakeman was a program director at NINDS, where she managed a portfolio of grants and cooperative agreements in the areas of spinal cord injury, peripheral nerve injury and axonal regeneration.  Dr. Jakeman received her B.A. Biology from Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Florida. She did postdoctoral training in Neuroscience and Endocrinology at Genentech, Inc, and was a staff scientist doing discovery research in the Institute of Pharmacology at Syntex Research in Palo Alto, California.  Prior to joining NINDS, Dr. Jakeman spent 13 years on the faculty in the Department of Physiology and Cell Biology at The Ohio State University, where she enjoyed teaching and service and led a research lab studying the role of glial cells in the regenerative response following spinal cord injury using rodent models.
