The Office of Pain Policy and Planning (OPPP) advances pain research on a national level; coordinates and supports trans-NIH pain research and activities through the NIH Pain Consortium and trans-agency pain research through the Interagency Pain Research Coordinating Committee; and advises and coordinates the trans-NIH Helping to End Addiction Long-term (HEAL) initiative.
The OPPP also provides guidance and coordination of the NIH pain research programs through collaboration with the NIH Pain Consortium and supports the activities and programs of the consortium.
The OPPP at NINDS was created by Dr. Francis Collins based on recommendations in the report generated from the 2011 Institute of Medicine (IOM) Conference on Pain to enhance pain research and promote collaboration among researchers across the many NIH Institutes and Centers that have programs and activities addressing pain. The conference was one of several pain-relevant mandates in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010.
