The NINDS is seeking a Health Scientist Administrator (Program Director) in the Channels, Synapses, and Circuits Cluster. This individual will manage/co-manage a portfolio of research grants, cooperative agreements and/or contracts to support epilepsy research.  Individuals with broad expertise in research on the epilepsies, with preference for those with clinical research experience are encouraged to apply. This individual will complement team members who oversee basic, translational and clinical research on the epilepsies in the Cluster and in the Division of Clinical Research and the Division of Translational Research. Individuals with experience in clinical research are especially encouraged to apply.

Qualifications

NINDS is seeking candidates with:
  • A doctoral degree (MD and/or PhD)and post-doctoral training
  • Expertise in research towards understanding the epilepsies
  • Applicants must demonstrate that they have worked independently in planning, organizing, and conducting biomedical, behavioral health, or health-related research and/or served effectively in research program administration in these fields.

The NINDS is a leading supporter of biomedical research on disorders of the brain and the nervous system at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). NINDS provides funding and resources for basic, translational and clinical research through various funding opportunities within the three Divisions of Neuroscience, Clinical Research and Translational Research.

Located within the Division of Neuroscience, the Channels, Synapses, and Circuits Cluster provides oversight of grants focused on:

  1. Basic research on the physiological and pathological roles of channels, receptors, transporters, synapses, and neural circuits.
  2. Basic research to understand the development, plasticity, and vulnerability of synapses and circuits.
  3. Research on the disease mechanisms and interventions for the epilepsies.
  4. Basic and clinical research related to myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) and fatigue.
  5. Translational research that links the discoveries from the basic research into medication development and therapeutic interventions for treating neurological disorders, such as epilepsy.

Supported topics include: neural circuit analysis, synaptic transmission, synaptic plasticity, structural analysis of neuronal membrane proteins, channelopathies, and epilepsy. Program Directors in this Cluster work closely with colleagues in other NINDS Divisions and NIH Institutes to provide oversight and expertise on grants and contracts relevant to the research focus of the Cluster.

Salary and Benefits

The position will be filled under a Title 5 GS-601-13/14 or GS-15 appointment. Salary is commensurate with the experience and a full package of Civil Service benefits is available, including retirement, health and life insurance, leave, and savings plan (401K equivalent).
