Dr. Kriegstein’s research focuses on understanding human-specific aspects of brain development to help unveil the etiology of neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism and schizophrenia. This project aims to study human cortical development using human stem-cell derived brain organoids. Specifically, this study focuses on two neural progenitor cell types found in the outer subventricular zone (OSVZ): the outer radial glia (oRG) and intermediate progenitor (IP) cells, using techniques such as single cell genomics, bioinformatics, and spatial transcriptomics. These cell types are particularly important as they underlie developmental and evolutionary expansion of the human brain.
