Dr. Jan’s research program studies the function and regulation of potassium channels and calcium-activated chloride channels, and the contribution of channel modulation to the assembly and plasticity of functional neuronal circuits. Using a variety of approaches, her team aims to learn how these channels are targeted to specific subcellular compartments of a neuron, how they respond dynamically to neuronal activity, and how they modulate neuronal signaling. For this project, she aims to investigate the molecular and cell biological mechanisms underlying important functions of the TMEM16 (transmembrane proteins of unknown function) family in neuronal signaling, thermoregulation, and neurodegeneration
