Dr. Robert Newberry is a postdoctoral scholar in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at University of California, San Francisco. Under the mentorship of Drs. William DeGrado and Robert Edwards, Dr. Newberry will examine the physiological and pathological interactions of α-synuclein with lipid membranes. Specifically, he will test the hypothesis that a critical sequence feature of α-synuclein increases dynamics of the membrane-bound helix, which has implications for the transformation of α-synuclein into its pathological state. To accomplish this aim, Dr. Newberry will utilize NMR spectroscopy, mammalian cell culture and manipulation, and cellular imaging. If successful, this work will inform our understanding of the role of α-synuclein in neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Newberry received his Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts from The University of Texas at Austin. He completed his PhD at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
