The focus of Dr. McCullough's research is on identifying sex differences in cell death pathways during stroke, which are now recognized as major factors in the response to an ischemic insult. Her laboratory also studies aging and inflammation, and how these factors influence recovery after stroke. A dedicated mentor toward female physician-scientists in a male-dominated field, Dr. McCullough’s mentoring approach highlighted sponsorship of her trainees, positioning them toward their own individual successes.
