Dr. Cheryl Stucky studies the cellular mechanisms that underlie neuropathic-like pain in Fabry Disease, whereby lipids collect abnormally inside cells and disrupt physiological functions. This proposal seeks to identify pain mechanisms that are unique to Fabry Disease, including a possible role for PIezo2 and TRPA1 ion channels in dorsal root ganglion sensory neurons. A deeper understanding of these mechanisms will ultimately help to identify improved pain treatment strategies.
