Sandeep Kishore, Ph.D., has joined the Office of the BRAIN Director as a AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow. Before joining the BRAIN initiative, Sandeep was trained as a neuroscientist, and spent nearly 20 years conducting basic research on how neural circuits in the spinal cord operate and wire up as animals develop. He did his Ph.D. at Cornell University and a postdoc at Northwestern University where he used a combination of imaging, electrophysiology and molecular techniques to investigate the function and development of spinal circuits for movement in larval zebrafish.
Sandeep grew up in New Delhi, India and majored in Biochemistry as an undergraduate before making his way to the United States for his Ph.D. While a postdoc at Northwestern, Sandeep became interested in promoting access to basic research as a central pillar of democracy. Sandeep is now keen to help shape science policies that promote basic research while making it more accessible and available to everyone. Outside work, he spends most of his time devising ways to entertain his 3-year-old son Sid, and 6-year-old pup Reyva.
