Alzheimer’s Disease-Related Dementias Summits

Overview

The National Plan to Address Alzheimer’s Disease

The National Plan to Address Alzheimer’s Disease, launched by the National Alzheimer's Project Act (NAPA), plans, coordinates, and integrates federal and non-federal (private and state-level) activities to overcome Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, including through research, clinical care, and long-term services and support. The National Plan presents five ambitious goals to prevent and effectively treat Alzheimer's disease and related dementias and to better meet the needs of the millions of American families affected by these diseases.

Alzheimer’s Disease-Related Dementias (ADRD)

NAPA and the National Plan define "Alzheimer's" as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Alzheimer’s Disease-Related Dementias (ADRD), which include frontotemporal dementia (FTD), Lewy body dementia (LBD), vascular contributions to cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID), and mixed dementias -- such as AD mixed with cerebrovascular disease or Lewy bodies. These diseases can be difficult to distinguish clinically, and they share some common neurodegenerative processes. In addition, people with these dementias and their families and caregivers face similar challenges in finding appropriate and necessary medical care and services.

ADRD Summits

The first goal in the National Plan aims to prevent and effectively treat (delay onset, slow progression of) AD/ADRD by 2025. To help achieve this goal, NIH holds a triennial series of summits to set and refine research priorities for AD, ADRD, and Dementia Care. Every three years, NINDS leads the ADRD Summit. After consideration and approval by the NINDS Advisory Council and the NAPA Advisory Council, recommendations developed through the ADRD Summits become part of the National Plan. The research recommendations also guide NIH investments in ADRD research by informing future AD/ADRD Bypass Budgets, annual professional judgment budgets that NIH prepares and submits to the President for review and transmittal to Congress each year.
