Neuroethics, Bioethics
Saskia Hendriks, M.D., Ph.D., serves as Neuroethics Consultant to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). She works as a subject matter expert in the NINDS Neuroethics Program and the BRAIN Neuroethics Program. Dr. Hendriks founded and leads the Neuroethics Consultation Service, providing ethics consultation for NIH staff on emerging issues in neuroscience research.
Dr. Hendriks is also a staff scientist in the Department of Bioethics at the NIH Clinical Center. From 2023–2025, she served as Chief of the Bioethics Consultation Service at the NIH Clinical Center. Her scholarship focuses on neuroethics, clinical research ethics, reproductive ethics, and the ethical challenges raised by innovative biomedical technologies, including neural devices, fetal therapies, and data sharing. She has published widely in leading medical and bioethics journals, including The New England Journal of Medicine, Neuron, and JAMA Neurology.
Dr. Hendriks received her M.D. and Ph.D. from the University of Amsterdam. Prior to her current position, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Department of Bioethics at the NIH Clinical Center from 2017-2019.
