Dr. Emmanuel Akano is the Director of the Neurology Consult Service within the Office of the Clinical Director at NINDS. He leads the team which provides expert consultations for patients with complex and rare neurological conditions at the NIH Clinical Center. In addition to this role, he serves as the Co-Director of the NINDS/Georgetown Neurology Residency Training Program. Dr. Akano received his medical degree from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, in 2006; followed by graduate studies in Neuroscience at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. He pursued his neurology residency at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine from 2012 to 2016, where he was appointed Chief Resident in his final year.

Dr. Akano first joined the NIH in 2016 as a clinical fellow in a combined program focused on movement disorder neurology and basic neuroscience research. Before returning to NINDS in 2024 to assume his current role, he was a staff physician specializing in neurodegenerative diseases at the VA Maryland Healthcare System, Baltimore from 2023 to 2024. Dr. Akano's research focuses on discovering and developing novel therapeutic agents for Parkinson's disease. He is dedicated to advancing medical education, optimizing neurological care, and furthering neuroscience research.
