The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the National Institute of Dental Research (NIDR), the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK),the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and the Office of Research on Women"s Health (ORWH) invite applications for highly focused basic research integrated with the WOMEN"S INTERAGENCY HIV STUDY (WIHS) scope and structure. Applications are expected to utilize the WIHS study population, a large cohort of HIV-infected women in the U.S., to formulate specific hypotheses concerning HIV/AIDS pathogenesis in women. The WIHS cohort is followed in five large metropolitan areas (New York, Washington DC, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco).

The NINDS seeks to fund high quality clinical trials to evaluate treatments for neurological disorders. The NINDS Clinical Trial Planning Grant allows for early peer review of the rationale and design for clinical trials of treatments for neurological disorders and provides support for the development of a detailed clinical trial research plan, including a complete manual of operations and procedures.

The NINDS is committed to identifying effective treatments for neurological disorders by supporting well-executed clinical trials. Before proceeding to a full-scale clinical trial, pilot clinical studies are often required. The NINDS announces its interest in supporting pilot studies required to obtain necessary information to clearly establish the clinical basis for proceeding to a full-scale trial. The purpose of NINDS Pilot Clinical Trial Grant For Neurological Disease is to obtain preliminary data and conduct studies to support the rationale for a subsequent full-scale clinical trial of an intervention to treat or prevent neurological disease.

The objective of this initiative is to encourage research on strategies to prevent or delay adverse aging-related changes and diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders, using genetic and cellular engineering approaches.

The National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), National Institute on Aging (NIA), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), and the National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) are interested in facilitating investigator-initiated research into nonpharmacological intervention strategies designed to deal with symptoms associated with cognitive impairment in adults. Several conditions can result in cognitive impairment, including Alzheimer"s disease, multi-infarct dementia, AIDS-related cognitive dysfunction, traumatic brain injury, stroke, and other neurological conditions such as Parkinson"s disease. The overall goals are to deter or delay symptoms requiring costly services or institutionalization and improve health-related quality of life for patients, caregivers, and families.

The purpose of this Request for Applications (RFA) is to expand the Rat Genome Project by soliciting applications for research projects to accomplish three objectives: 1) arraying and distributing existing rat cDNA libraries, 2) developing Expressed Sequence Tags (ESTs) from those libraries, and 3) mapping a subset of those ESTs. The overall goal of this effort is to construct a rat gene catalog and an EST map that will facilitate the mapping of genes in the rat and increase the value of the rat as a biomedical research model.

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), National Eye Institute (NEI), National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), and National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) invite applications for support of research that will increase our knowledge of the mechanisms that underlie processes of injury and repair in the central nervous system (CNS), including optic nerve and other CNS tracts, and that will provide strategies for therapeutic intervention in spinal cord injury.

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) invite research grant applications through this Program Announcement (PA) to support research focused on determining the pathogenic mechanisms involved in HIV-1 associated neurobehavioral and neurological dysfunction in adults and children. The objective of this cooperative effort is to foster investigations that will provide the foundation for the rapid development of therapeutic interventions to prevent and treat the effects of HIV-1 on the central nervous system (CNS).
