The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Investigator-Initiated Small Research Grant (R03) funding opportunity supports small research projects that can be carried out in a short period of time with limited resources. The R03 grant mechanism supports different types of projects including pilot and feasibility studies; secondary analysis of existing data; small, self-contained research projects; development of research methodology; and development of new research technology.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA, encourages Research Program Grant (R01) applications that propose to study the ethical, legal and social implications (ELSI) of human genome research.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages Exploratory/Developmental Research Program Grant (R21) applications from institutions/organizations that propose to study the ethical, legal and social implications (ELSI) of human genome research. These applications should propose exploratory or novel studies that break new ground or extend previous discoveries toward new directions or applications. Of particular interest are studies that explore the implications of new or emerging genomic technologies or novel uses of genomic information.

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) issued by the Basic Behavioral and Social Sciences Research Opportunity Network (OppNet), National Institutes of Health (NIH), solicits Research Project Grant (R21) applications from institutions/organizations that propose to investigate the reciprocal interactions of the processes of sleep and circadian regulation and function with behavioral and social environment processes. Sleep is a complex biological phenomenon that is essential to normal behavioral and social functioning, as well as optimal health. In spite of its vital nature, the mechanisms by which social environment factors affect sleep behavior patterns have not been studied systematically, especially within the context of individual vulnerabilities and resilience. There is a need for greater understanding of the dynamic relationships between behavioral and social environment factors on the one hand and the basic mechanisms of sleep-wake and circadian regulation and function on the other. This FOA is not intended to support research on or development of treatments or interventions for disorders of sleep or circadian rhythms.

This FOA is issued as an initiative of the NIH Blueprint for Neuroscience Research. The Neuroscience Blueprint is a collaborative framework through which 16 NIH Institutes, Centers and Offices jointly support neuroscience-related research, with the aim of accelerating discoveries and reducing the burden of nervous system disorders (for further information, see http://neuroscienceblueprint.nih.gov/).

This FOA solicits Research Education Grant (R25) applications from institutions/organizations that propose to support the development and/or implementation of programs that relate to research education and training of clinical residents and fellows to foster careers as physician-scientists. The PD/PI (see below) must have a staff appointment in a Department of Neurology, Neurosurgery or Pathology and participants in the research education program must be residents or fellows in neurology, neurosurgery, neuropathology or neuroradiology (see Eligible Individuals). The NIH recognizes a unique and compelling need to promote diversity in the biomedical, behavioral, clinical and social sciences research workforce. Accordingly, the NIH continues to encourage institutions to diversify their student and faculty populations and thus to increase the participation of individuals currently underrepresented in the biomedical, clinical, behavioral, and social sciences such as: individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, and individuals with disabilities. This FOA solicits Research Project Grant (R01) applications from institutions/organizations proposing exceptionally innovative research on novel hypotheses or difficult problems, solutions to which would have an extremely high impact on biomedical or biobehavioral research in the epilepsies. This FOA is for support of new projects, not continuation of projects that have already been initiated. It does not support pilot projects, i.e., projects of limited scope that are designed primarily to generate data that will enable the PD/PI to seek other funding opportunities. Interventional clinical trials are also not appropriate for this FOA.

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA), issued by NINDS, is to invite applications for a study of candidate biomarkers in Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). The study will be done using the NeuroNEXT infrastructure (as established in response to RFA-NS-11-009, RFA-NS-11-010, RFA-NS-11-008) along with ad hoc clinical sites as appropriate. This is a milestone-driven cooperative agreement program involving participation of NIH staff in the development of the project plan and monitoring of research progress.

The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) invite new (type 1) and competitive renewal (type 2) applications for the Autism Centers of Excellence: Centers Program, hereafter termed ACE Centers. ACE Centers will focus on supporting the broad research goals of the 2011 Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee Strategic Plan for ASD Research (http://iacc.hhs.gov/strategic-plan/2011/index.shtml. The P50 mechanism allows for integrative, multi-disciplinary, coordinated programs of research that demonstrate cohesion and synergy across research subprojects and cores. A companion FOA (RFA-HD-12-196) invites applications for ACE Networks supported by the R01 mechanism.

The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) invite new (type 1) and renewal (type 2) applications for the Autism Centers of Excellence: Networks Program, hereafter termed ACE Networks. Each ACE Network will consist of a multi-site project focusing on a specific topic of research for R01 support through this FOA. The ACE Networks will focus on supporting the broad research goals of the Interagency Coordinating Committee Strategic Plan for ASD Research (http://iacc.hhs.gov/strategic-plan/2011/index.shtml). Each ACE Network will submit one R01 application that includes subawardss to the collaborating sites. A companion FOA (RFA-HD-12-195) invites applications for ACE Centers supported by the P50 mechanism.
