The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to create a consortium to begin development of an NIH Data Discovery Index (DDI) to allow discovery, access, and citation of biomedical data. As part of the NIH Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) initiative, the DDI seeks to fulfill the recommendation from the Data and Informatics Working Group (DIWG) report to the Advisory Council of the Director (http://acd.od.nih.gov/06142012_DIWG_ExecSummary.pdf) to "Promote Data Sharing Through Central and Federated Catalogues." The awardee in response to this FOA will constitute a DDI Coordination Consortium (DDICC, U24) to conduct outreach, fund small pilot projects, manage communication with stakeholders, constitute and coordinate Task Forces to study relevant questions related to access, discoverability, citation for all biomedical data and assure community engagement in the development, testing and validation of an NIH DDI. Part of this effort will be to assemble a user interface (website) through which the results of development and testing of models for an NIH DDI may be communicated. It is anticipated that a successful DDICC will work with the NIH to overcome obstacles in the way of better use and application of biomedical big data by developing a working concept for a DDI.

The SCORE Program is a developmental program designed to increase the research competitiveness of faculty and research base of institutions with a historical mission and/or demonstrated track record of training and graduating students from backgrounds underrepresented in biomedical research. In addition, eligible institutions must award science degrees to undergraduate (B.S. or B.A.) and/or graduate students (M.S. or Ph.D.) and have received on average less than 6 million dollars per year of NIH R01 support (total cost) in the last 2 fiscal years.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will award Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Institutional Research Training Grants (T32) to eligible, domestic institutions to enhance predoctoral and postdoctoral research training, including short-term research training, and help ensure that a diverse and highly trained workforce is available to meet the needs of the Nations biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research agenda. Research training programs will incorporate didactic, research, and career development components to prepare individuals for careers that will have a significant impact on the health-related research needs of the Nation. Programs proposing only short-term research training should not apply to this announcement, but rather to the Kirschstein-NRSA Short-Term Institutional Research Training Grant Program (T35) exclusively reserved for predoctoral, short-term research training (see PA-14-016).

This FOA seeks applications to develop a data coordination and integration center (DCIC) that will address the opportunities and challenges provided by two major NIH efforts: Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) and the Library of Integrated Network-Based Cellular Signatures (LINCS). The NIH expects that this BD2K-LINCS DCIC will focus on perturbagen-response data and signatures while ensuring that the resulting resources are effectively utilized by the community by addressing challenges related to biomedical Big Data. A successful DCIC will ensure consistent annotation of data and tools generated within the LINCS program; incorporate (without replicating databases) relevant non-LINCS perturbation data into the LINCS resource; support integration of relevant data, signatures, and tools to allow for seamless exploration of the (LINCS) programs output by a broad range of biomedical researchers; support linkages to outside knowledge bases, data portals, and resources; support training in perturbation-data science skills; build innovative access and query tools to disparate databases hosting multiple data types; and disseminate the resulting tools and resources to the broad range of biomedical researchers. This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) invites applications for the Centers for Collaborative Research in Fragile X. Successful Centers will be composed of transdisciplinary teams of investigators working together to address focused and challenging scientific questions within targeted areas of research. The targeted areas of research are intended to address research gaps, drive discovery and further develop research relevant to Fragile X syndrome and Fragile X Gene (FMR1)- Related Conditions.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) seeks Research Project Grant (R01) applications addressing exceptionally novel hypotheses and/or remarkably difficult problems in neuroscience and disorders of the nervous system. This announcement is for support of new rather than ongoing projects, and is not intended for pilot research. The proposed research may have a high risk of failure, but it must promise results with especially high impact should it be successful. The research should be groundbreaking, innovative, original and/or unconventional, with the potential to solve important problems or open new areas for investigation.

This FOA invites Research Education Grant (R25) applications from institutions/organizations to support the development and/or implementation of programs that relate to research education and preparation of clinical residents and fellows that will foster careers as physician-scientists. The PD/PI must have a staff appointment in a Department of Neurology, Neurosurgery or Pathology. Participants in the research education program must be residents or fellows, typically in neurology, neurosurgery, neuropathology, neuroradiology, anesthesiology or emergency medicine, who will conduct research within the mission of NINDS. The NIH recognizes a unique and compelling need to promote diversity in the biomedical, behavioral, clinical and social sciences research workforce. Accordingly, the NIH continues to encourage institutions to diversify their faculty populations and thus to increase the participation of individuals currently underrepresented in the biomedical, clinical, behavioral, and social sciences such as individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, and individuals with disabilities. PDs/PIs are encouraged to consider participants from diverse backgrounds for this funding opportunity.

The purpose of the NINDS Neurological Sciences Academic Development Award (NSADA K12) is to facilitate and support the research career development of pediatric neurologists at educational institutions or professional organizations who have made a commitment to independent research careers. The NSADA program is intended to provide three consecutive years of support to individuals to provide them with the knowledge, tools and research experience that will enable them to transition to significant, individually-supported research.

The goal of this program is to support collaborative translational research projects aligned with NIH efforts to enhance the translation of basic biological discoveries into clinical applications that improve health. It encourages high quality science demonstrating the potential to result in understanding an important disease process or lead to new therapeutic interventions, diagnostics, or prevention strategies within the research interests and priorities of the participating NIH Institutes/Centers (ICs).
