Temporary Extension of Eligibility for the NIH Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00)

NIH will provide an automatic extension until October/November 2025 receipt dates for prospective applicants to the K99/R00 program. The extension is limited to individuals whose eligibility period under the Parent K99/R00 would have ended between October 2024 – January 2026.

Temporary Policy Exception to Permit Continued Eligibility for Mentored Career Development Award When an Award Ended Early

Effective immediately, NIH will allow individuals whose mentored career development awards prematurely ended on or after January 1, 2025, to be eligible to apply for a new mentored career development award, contingent upon all other eligibility requirements being met.

Additional Information

This program is designed to facilitate a timely transition of postdoctoral researchers conducting ADRD research into independent, tenure-track or equivalent faculty positions. The program will provide independent NIH research support during this transition in order to help awardees establish independent research programs in the ADRD field.

The NINDS AD/ADRD K99/R00 award is intended for individuals who have no more than four years of postdoctoral research experience, and who require at least 12 months of mentored research training and career development (K99 phase) before transitioning to the R00 award phase of the program. This K99/R00 award can provide up to 5 years of support in two phases: up to 2 years for the K99 phase and up to 3 years for the R00 phase.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to consult with NIH scientific/research staff as early as possible before the due date when planning an application. Early contact provides an opportunity for NIH scientific/research staff to provide guidance on program scope and appropriateness of the proposed research and training for potential funding in response to this NOFO. Please go to the NOFO to find out about NINDS mission on ADRD research. Applications that do not fit the NINDS AD/ADRD mission focused research areas will be withdrawn.
