Dr. Stephanie R. Jones is a professor of neuroscience at Brown University whose mentorship is distinguished by her interdisciplinary and holistic approach. She brings her mathematics background to bear in her approach to training mentees across computational modeling, neuroimaging, and translational neuroscience, preparing them to thrive as adaptable, innovative scientists. Dr. Jones is recognized for creating a supportive and inclusive environment where trainees are encouraged to grow both professionally and personally, with attention to work-life balance and individual strengths. She provides structured guidance to undergraduate and graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows from disciplines beyond neuroscience, including math, engineering, and computer science, helping them progress from early research experiences to independent careers. She contributes to training outside of her lab through numerous efforts that include managing a summer research program for undergraduate students. Dr. Jones goes above and beyond for her trainees, encouraging them to broaden their skills outside of their direct projects through activities as varied as pursuing a concurrent Master’s in complementary subfields to entrepreneurial pursuits. She “pays it forward”, cultivating the next generation of good mentors by space for her own mentees to learn to mentor and teach through formal and informal opportunities.  Her dedication to mentorship was recently honored with Brown University’s Faculty Award for Advising and Mentoring in the Life Sciences, underscoring her commitment to shaping a new generation of scientists who approach research with rigor, creativity, and compassion.
