Dr. Jenny Hsieh is a distinguished neuroscientist whose mentorship extends across all levels of training. As Chair of the Department of Neuroscience, Developmental and Regenerative Biology at The University of Texas at San Antonio and Director of the UTSA Brain Health Consortium, she fosters cross-disciplinary opportunities for students and trainees to engage in cutting-edge research on epilepsy, stem cells, and neurogenesis. Dr. Hsieh’s approach to mentoring is marked by prioritization of training to promote scientific excellence and adherence to the highest standards rigor both in her own lab and her institution. She mentors with an emphasis on reproducibility, teaching her mentees that the work they do will serve as a foundation for the broader scientific community to build upon. Dr. Hsieh gives thoughtful attention to sustaining a laboratory culture of inquiry and support, implementing practices that allow each mentee to feel valued and respected. She has guided students through research fellowships, helped broaden participation to provide access for all, and built institutional capacity to support mentorship on a large scale. Her dedication to advancing brain health is matched by her deep investment in cultivating future leaders in science, both through her own laboratory and through her service on NIH study sections, editorial boards, and scientific societies.
