Dr. Holtzman has made a substantial contribution to training the next generation of neuroscientists. His trainees have pursued a variety of career paths, and many are now training their own mentees. Dr. Holtzman’s mentoring approach is defined by his commitment to helping his mentees develop a scientific mindset through the cultivation of seven central tenets, including designing experiments rigorously. Several mentees noted the high priority he places on being available to his trainees. They described “The Holtzman Immediacy” as a cornerstone of his success in facilitating mentee career progression and their contributions to science. Among Dr. Holtzman’s broader contributions to research training were his efforts to expand opportunities for trainees to present their work while he was president of the American Neurological Society.
