The NINDS is seeking a Health Scientist Administrator (Program Director/Program Officer) in the Repair & Plasticity Cluster. This individual will oversee extramural activities and manage a portfolio including basic, translational, and clinical neuroscience research and training in: neural interface technologies that record, modulate, or stimulate neural activity; novel biomaterials for repair and neural interface devices; and bioengineering applied to the nervous system (including development of hardware, software, and computational techniques).

Qualifications

NINDS is seeking candidates with:

  • A doctoral degree and post-doctoral training
  • Expertise in research towards understanding and applying cutting edge engineering concepts and technologies for neuroscience.
  • Experience with mentoring is highly valued.
  •  Applicants must demonstrate that they have worked independently in planning, organizing, conducting, and communicating biomedical behavioral health, or health-related research and/or served effectively in research program administration in these fields.

We encourage applications from candidates who enjoy working collaboratively and bring a diverse perspective to neural engineering research.

The NINDS is a leading supporter of biomedical research on disorders of the brain and the nervous system at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). NINDS provides funding and resources for basic, translational and clinical research through various funding opportunities within the three Divisions of Neuroscience, Clinical Research and Translational Research.

Located within the Division of Neuroscience, the Repair & Plasticity (R&P) Cluster provides oversight of grants to support:

  1. Efforts to understand mechanisms of plasticity, endogenous neurogenesis, and stem and progenitor cell biology in the development, maintenance, and repair of the nervous system.
  2. Research that focuses on the course of degeneration and repair following injury to the nervous system (including spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury) and on strategies and interventions to improve functional outcomes.
  3. Development of neural interface devices designed to monitor activity and restore function after neurological injury or disease.

Supported research topics include:

  • spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, and associated research on the recovery of function;
  • plasticity of the nervous system;
  • neural circuits that underlie specific behaviors;
  • repair of the nervous system in injury and disease;
  • stem cell biology;
  • neural prosthesis, neural engineering, and other means of repairing the nervous system due to injury or disease.

Program Directors in the R&P Cluster work closely with colleagues in other NINDS Divisions and NIH Institutes to oversight and expertise on grants and contracts relevant to the research focus of the Cluster.
