This Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) highlights interest in receiving grant applications focused on mechanistic, genetic, and other studies to evaluate causes and consequences of and risk factors for sudden death in the young. Studies are required to use phenotypic data and/or DNA samples and/or associated sequence data from the NIH/CDC Sudden Death in the Young (SDY) Case Registry as foundations for their research. Studies may use SDY Case Registry phenotypic data and/or samples and/or sequence data alone or in combination with other cohorts. Results of such studies are required to adhere to the NIH Data Sharing Policy https://sharing.nih.gov/data-management-and-sharing-policy so that the data is disseminated widely and provides an evidence base to advance discussions about screening and prevention of SDY.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to facilitate the transition of previously funded SBIR and STTR Phase II and Phase IIB projects in pain management to the commercialization stage by providing additional assistance for private partnering activities through the Commercialization Readiness Pilot (CRP) program. Specifically, this FOA supports the addition of entrepreneurial expertise into small business leadership teams along with supporting partnering activities to aid in commercialization through private third-party funding or partnership with industry.

This NOSI supports creation of data archive(s), development of software tools, and establishment of data standards for BBQS-related studies to address the above-described challenges in the research program. The informatics infrastructure and tools to be developed under this NOSI are expected to be widely used by BBQS investigators, as well as by a broader community. Applications in response to this NOSI should therefore clearly justify the importance and implications of the proposed informatics infrastructure or tools to the BBQS program, and identify the potential user base. The projects funded under this NOSI are expected to support, communicate and collaborate with the funded BBQS research projects. Applicants should therefore familiarize themselves with the BBQS research program and funded projects (https://www.braininitiative.nih.gov/funding/initiatives.htm; also see RFA-MH-22-240 and RFA-DA-23-030).

The purpose of the NIH HEAL InitiativeSM Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00) program is to support a cohort of new and talented independent investigators conducting Pain and/or SUD research, in order to increase the independent investigator workforce in research areas supported by the NIH HEAL InitiativeSM. This program is designed to facilitate a timely transition of eligible outstanding postdoctoral researchers from their mentored, postdoctoral research positions to independent, tenure-track or equivalent faculty positions. The program will provide independent NIH research support during this transition to help awardees establish independent research programs in areas supported by the NIH HEAL InitiativeSM.

The purpose of the NIH HEAL InitiativeSM Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00) program is to enhance workforce diversity in the research workforce and maintain a strong cohort of new and talented independent investigators conducting Pain and/or SUD research, in order to increase the pool of diverse and independent investigator workforce in research areas supported by the NIH HEAL InitiativeSM. This program is designed to facilitate a timely transition of eligible postdoctoral researchers from their mentored, postdoctoral research positions to independent, tenure-track or equivalent faculty positions. The program will provide independent NIH research support during this transition to help awardees establish independent research programs in areas supported by the NIH HEAL InitiativeSM. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is designed specifically for applicants proposing research to serve as the lead investigator of an independent clinical trial, a clinical trial feasibility study, an ancillary clinical trial, or an independent Basic Experimental Studies with Humans (BESH). Applicants not planning an independent clinical trial, or proposing to gain research experience in a clinical trial led by another investigator, must apply to companion FOA (RFA-NS-22-025).

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is designed specifically for applicants proposing research that does not involve leading an independent clinical trial, a clinical trial feasibility study, an ancillary clinical trial, or an independent Basic Experimental Studies with Humans (BESH). Applicants to this FOA are permitted to propose research experience in a clinical trial led by a mentor or co-mentor. Applicants proposing an independent clinical trial, a clinical trial feasibility study, an ancillary clinical trial, or an independent BESH as lead investigator, should apply to the companion FOA (RFA-NS-22-024).

The overarching goal of this program is to enhance the retention of investigators facing critical life events who are transitioning to the first renewal of their first independent research project grant award or to a second new NIH research project grant award. Retention at the first renewal or continuous NIH research project grant support is crucial for sustaining both the ongoing research NIH has made an investment in and for retaining diverse talent in the biomedical research workforce. This program supports at-risk investigators as identified in the NIH Next Generation Researchers Initiative (see https://grants.nih.gov/ngri.htm).

The overarching goal of this program is to enhance the retention of investigators facing critical life events who are transitioning from mentored career development awards to research independence and to minimize departures from biomedical research workforce. This supplement program is intended to ensure continuity of research among recipients of mentored career development (K) awards by providing supplemental research support to help sustain the investigators research during a period in which the PD/PI experiences critical life events which have the potential to impact research progress or potential productivity. Administrative supplements must support work within the scope of the original project.
