Dr. Gentry examines the nature and mechanisms of glycogen metabolism and how mis-regulation of these signaling events can lead to a form of neurodegenerative epilepsy called Lafora disease (LD). Recent work suggests that glycogen aggregates in the brain may cause LD. For this proposal, he will use LD as an investigative disease model for glycogen mis-regulation by studying signaling at the molecular level, changes in cellular physiology, and work to establish novel therapeutic modalities at the organismal level. This complementary approach will yield a better comprehension of these complex events and support translational insights into LD disease mechanisms, diagnoses, and treatments.
