Dr. Staley's research program has focused on developing expertise in neuronal ion homeostasis and translating findings to clinical care. Though he has focused on seizure therapies, his work on ion homeostasis is equally applicable to neuronal volume changes after brain injury. For this project, he will investigate neuronal shifts in ions and volume after injury in vitro and in vivo, using advancing imaging techniques and ion-sensitive fluorophores. These results will provide novel insights into whether volume shifts in injured neurons can translate to novel therapeutic strategies for the injured brain.
