Damage to or loss of the peripheral axons of primary sensory neurons can lead to peripheral neuropathic pain and peripheral neuropathy, for which treatments are difficult or non-existent. Dr. Woolf’s research focuses on identifying potential targets for developing novel therapeutics to treat peripheral neuropathy and neuropathic pain. His program will dissect transcriptional and functional changes of neurons in response to physical axonal injury, interrogating at high temporal and spatial resolution the neuronal changes contributing to pain and sensory loss.
