Dr. Jan studies the function and regulation of potassium channels and calcium-activated chloride channels, and the contribution of channel modulation to the assembly and plasticity of functional neuronal circuits. Using a variety of approaches, her team aims to learn how these channels are targeted to specific subcellular compartments of a neuron, how they respond dynamically to neuronal activity, and how they modulate neuronal signaling. Dr. Jan was uniformly praised by her trainees, both relatively recent and from long ago, for leading by example and simultaneously encouraging them to pursue their research ideas and passions, however far astray from her own. Her trainees, now found all over the world, spoke of her quiet yet enormously effective approach to cultivating confidence in their ideas. Notably, she offered generous amounts of her time to trainees and their projects, and treated as expectation that trainees would take their projects to pursue in independence.
