Dr. Hulya Bayir's laboratory examines mechanisms underlying traumatic brain injury (TBI) in children, focusing on how oxidized phospholipids play key roles in the execution of cell death pathways. To address these questions, she uses oxidative lipidomics methods, in vitro and in vivo models of critical illness, and patient tissue samples. For this project, she seeks to test novel therapeutic compounds in experiments with rodents that will prevent neuronal death and improve outcomes following pediatric TBI, which could lead to targeted TBI therapies for children.
