Dr. Bastian’s studies of human motor deficits following damage to the CNS gives clues about how to optimize motor learning during recovery using techniques such as split-belt treadmill training, virtual reality, 3D motion tracking and reconstruction, EMG analysis, structural MRI, and non-invasive brain stimulation. She is currently investigating how rehabilitation regimens interact with instructive, adaptive, and reinforcement motor learning mechanisms and whether transcranial direct current stimulation can be used to augment these mechanisms.
