Dr. Natalia Strunnikova joined NINDS in 2011. She serves as a Scientific Review Officer (SRO) for the NINDS Neurological Sciences and Disorders (NSD)-A standing study section that reviews translational programs including IGNITE, CREATE and Biomarkers applications. The NSD-A is evaluating small molecules and biological therapeutic approaches as well as biomarker discovery and validation strategies in disease areas including Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), hypoxia, stroke, epilepsy, cardiac arrest, pain, sleep, tumor development, peripheral neuropathy, and cognition. Dr. Strunnikova also leads reviews of NINDS BRAIN Circuits U19 programs, multicenter trial networks, and variety of multicomponent neuroscience programs. She received her undergraduate and master’s degrees in Biology and Genetics at Saint Petersburg State University in Russia and her Ph.D. in Genetics through the Graduate Exchange Program between St. Petersburg State University (Russia) and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1997. Natalia received a second Master’s of Health Sciences in Clinical Research degree from Duke University in 2003. In 1999 Natalia joined the National Eye Institute as a Research Fellow and in 2005 was appointed as a Staff Scientist in the Inter institute Gene Therapy Consortium (GTC) in the Clinical Research Center. Natalia’s expertise is in the areas of clinical and translational research, genetics, degenerative diseases, neural injury, animal models, HIV virology, oxidative stress, progenitor cell biology, drug addiction and high throughput bioinformatics.
