Dr. Mir Ahamed Hossain is a Scientific Review Officer (SRO) at the Scientific Review Branch of NINDS. Dr. Hossain joined the NINDS in 2018 and serves as SRO for various Special Emphasis Panels including the NINDS BRAIN Initiative Awards (U01, R01), NIH Loan Repayment Program for Clinical and Pediatric Research (L30, L40), ADRD VCID R01 and VCID CT Planning (R34) grants. Dr. Hossain received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and pursued postdoctoral training in Neuropharmacology, and Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience before joining the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he later promoted to the academic rank of Associate Professor of Neurology. Dr. Hossain is a molecular/cellular biologist with scientific expertise in experimental neuroscience centered on hypoxic-ischemic brain injury in developing brain, ischemic stroke, and diseases including neurodevelopmental disorders (Rett syndrome), neurodegeneration and aging (Parkinson’s Disease). His research team investigated neurotoxicity/cell death, apoptosis, mitochondrial dysfunction, neuroinflammation, intracellular second messenger signaling pathways, cell-based gene delivery, gene expression and regulation, implantation of neural precursor cells into the brain and neurogenesis for the assessment of mechanism(s) to achieve neuroprotection and improve functional outcomes using animal models, primary neuronal and cell cultures models and behavioral studies to assess memory and motor functions.
