Dr. Tucker joined the scientific review branch (SRB) at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) in July of 2021. As a scientific review officer at NINDS, Dr. Tucker will lead the scientific merit review of proposals in a variety of special emphasis panels and study sections run within the translational, training, and neuroscience clusters of the SRB. Dr. Tucker is a developmental neurobiologist by training and is broadly interested in the assembly and function of neural circuits during health and disease. Prior to joining NIH, Dr. Tucker was a tenured associate professor at West Virginia University in the Department of Neuroscience and member of the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute. His laboratory explored cellular, molecular and genetic mechanisms underlying forebrain development in mice. A major NIH/NINDS funded component of this research program focused on how the c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling pathway regulates the migration of inhibitory cortical interneurons. Findings from these studies identified novel requirements for JNK signaling in the developing forebrain, which adds fundamental insight into how certain neurological disorders may arise. Dr. Tucker transitioned into an administrative career at NIH to better serve the mission of NINDS and is looking forward to using his expertise to more broadly impact biomedical science at the highest level.
