Dr. Amber McCartney is the NINDS Alzheimer's Disease and Alzheimer's Disease Related Dementias (AD/ADRD) Project Manager. In her role, she helps coordinate AD/ADRD program activities across NINDS.  Dr. McCartney received a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley in Molecular and Cellular Biology with an emphasis in Neurobiology and Music. She worked as a Research Technician at The Neurosciences Institute in San Diego, CA studying attention-like behaviors in fruit flies. She earned her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where she studied homeostatic regulation of synapse function and roles for PI(3,5)P2 signaling lipids in mouse models of neurodegenerative disease. She did postdoctoral training  in the Departments of Cell Biology and Neuroscience at Yale University. Prior to joining NINDS, Dr. McCartney worked as a Research Scientist at Arvinas, a biotech in New Haven, CT, where she performed discovery research for neurodegenerative disease drug targets, focusing on electrophysiology and high-content analysis/screening. Dr. McCartney first joined NINDS in 2020 as a Health Program Specialist for the Neurodegeneration Cluster in the Division of Neuroscience and began supporting the NINDS AD/ADRD program full-time in 2022.
