Request for Information on the 2021-2026 National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke Strategic Plan

Key Dates

Response Date: March 15, 2021

Purpose

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) is currently developing a Strategic Plan for the next five years. This new plan will help NINDS to fulfill its mission to seek fundamental knowledge about the brain and nervous system and to use that knowledge to reduce the burden of neurological disease.

To create the strategic plan, taskforces of NINDS scientific and administrative staff from across the Institute assessed needs, opportunities, practices, and policies in the areas of neuroscience and neurology research, research training and workforce diversity, communication, and workforce culture. At multiple points during the planning process, NINDS sought input from our external stakeholder communities to inform our strategic goals and objectives:

  • At the start of the effort, a Request for Information (RFI)  gathered public input regarding our four broad strategic goals. A summary of RFI responses is available at https://www.ninds.nih.gov/NINDS-SP-RFISummaryStrategicGoal (pdf, 391 kb).
  • NINDS held multiple discussions with its National Advisory Neurological Disorders and Stroke Council, and the NINDS Deputy Director, Dr. Nina Schor, presented the broad goals of the plan at various professional society meetings, as well as at the annual NINDS Nonprofit Forum to gather additional input.
  • NINDS held a series of six discussion panels of external stakeholders offering their individual insights and opinions on basic research, therapy development, training, diversity, and career development, and communication strategies. Meeting summaries for these discussion panels are available at: https://www.ninds.nih.gov/About-NINDS/Strategic-Plans-Evaluations/Strategic-Plans/NINDS-Strategic-Planning.

The purpose of this RFI is to solicit feedback from the biomedical community and public about the draft 2021-2026 NINDS Strategic Plan, which is publicly available online: https://www.ninds.nih.gov/Draft_NINDSStrategicPlan2021-2026 (pdf, 1.1 mb). NINDS invites the biomedical community and the public to provide comments on the goals and objectives outlined in the draft strategic plan.
