Q: What is meant by Total Costs?
A: The Total Costs include the direct costs of conducting the research, and the Facilities and Administrative (F&A) costs
collected by your institution. F&A costs are sometimes called indirect costs or overhead. These supplements are awarded as
Total Costs.
Q: Are indirect costs included in the total?
A: Yes, within the maximums of $50,000 or $100,000, indirect costs are included (see above).
Q: Am I eligible?
A: You are eligible if your grant project period end date is April 30, 2002, or later.
Q: If I am not eligible, will I become eligible if I get a no-cost extension?
A: No.
Q: If I am not eligible this year, can I request a supplement under this program next year?
A: No, this supplement program is for FY2001 only. There is currently no plan to run the program again in FY 2002. These one-time
supplements are geared towards helping grantees develop preliminary data for new R21's or R01's.
Q: Will the supplement continue for the duration of the grant?
A: No, these are one-time awards.
Q: Can I hire new staff with this supplement?
A: Since the hiring of staff may indicate expansion of scope or create out-year commitment, it would not be appropriate to
hire new staff to carry out the proposed supplemental activity. However, moderate increases in level of effort of existing
staff might be appropriate.
Q: If I have more than one eligible grant, can I request a supplement for each grant?
A: You may, if you wish, request a supplement under this program for more than one eligible grant. However, one goal of the
program is to have the broadest possible impact on the field, so it is not likely that more than one supplemental award will
be made on behalf of a single PI.
Q: If I am the PI on a P01, P50, or U54 grant, can I request $100,000 even if only one sub-project is impacted?
A: If only one sub-project is impacted, it is very unlikely that an award larger than $50,000 will be made.
Q: Why must my proposed supplemental research be within the scope of the existing Specific Aims of my grant?
A: Distributions of funds by NIH in support of scientific research must be done based on peer review. The supplement requests
will be reviewed administratively, so the proposed research must be within the scope of the existing Specific Aims of the
grant, which were peer reviewed.
Q: Will I receive a score and a summary statement after the administrative review is complete?
A: No. A request for an administrative supplement does not constitute a grant application, and is not subject to the normal
grant review procedures. After the administrative review of the supplement requests, no scores or summary statements will
be available. The only information that will be available is the decision to award or not award a supplement.
Q: If I am unhappy with the results of the administrative review, can I appeal?
A: No. The decision whether or not to fund an administrative supplement is an administrative decision.
