Dr. Murphy opened the meeting with roundtable introductions and welcomed new and regular members of the PDCC.

Parkinson’s Plan from Summit Recommendations:

Dr. Murphy briefly reviewed the progress on the PD Plan to date for the group. Due to report language that required reporting on PD from both the House and the Senate this past year, the PD Plan was necessarily on hold until these congressional reports could be completed. The report to the House included a briefing on the Summit and was submitted late in 2005, and the Senate CACR was sent in spring of 2006 as usual.

The latest draft of the PD Plan was sent around prior to this meeting to solicit comments. Dr. Kelley outlined that the new version included advances at Dr. Landis' request and that Dr. Murphy included priorities in a bigger picture context and added language that highlighted overlapping BluePrint initiatives. The group reiterated the inclusion of health care issues as this was a big part of the World Parkinson's Congress held earlier this year

Roundtable Updates:

Dr. Murphy outlined the latest information on Blueprint efforts including plans for publication of four RFAs, including: (1) Biomarkers, (2) Delivery of Therapeutics, and (3, 4) Training Grants awards for interdisciplinary research. NIDA, NIMH, NIDCD, etc are all participating.

Other Institutes provided information on new grants being funded including NCRR's efforts on an Animal Models Database. Dr. Filart (NCRR) will keep us posted on the database as it develops. In other updates the VA is in the process of reviewing 15-20 proposals which it recently received, a number of which were related to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Also there is a 3 year follow-up of the DBS trial planned; it was noted that non-motor tests should be carefully considered for the follow up.

The DOD has just finished initial peer review of 116 proposals that were requested on 10 selected topics for PD. A large number of proposals did not address those topics, however between 28-32 applications do, and will be considered for funding. The NETRP program will also be switching out of the MOMRC and their new program umbrella will be CDMRP. They will also be accepting more ALS applications.

NIA is currently interested in collaboration on brain banking between AD centers and Udall Centers, via the PD-DOC. Their hope is to provide information to the PD-DOC as there is an established uniform dataset for pathology created by the NACC that PD-DOC has adapted.

Drs. Lawler and Kirshner emphasized that PD continues to be a priority at NIEHS. They currently have plans to release an announcement describing a Discovery Program, utilizing the P50 mechanism. The announcement will be broad, and include the range of neurodegenerative disorders, and the hope is that there will applications to come in on PD. The existing collaborative centers (original CCPDERs) are in their 5th year, and they expect some of these people will come in for the discovery program.

Finally, Dr. Lopez announced her intention to help organize centralized recruiting for PD patients in intramural; i.e. a way for patients to come into intramural and be referred to clinical research studies or protocols ongoing throughout any of the institutes. It was recommended that she discuss with Dr. Gottesman, and NINDS will send her a list of PD research names throughout intramural.

Dr. Murphy concluded the meeting by reminding participants that this year's Udall Centers Meeting will be held September 19-21 in Boston's Hyatt Harborside hotel. Also there was a reminder that the 2007 World Parkinson's Congress planning would soon be underway and that Institutes should be thinking about co-funding efforts.
